What to Check Before Buying a $200–$500 Generator

A small carryable generator and a larger wheeled generator may cost a similar amount but do very different jobs. First list what you want to plug in. Then think about who will move it and start it. Check Amazon for current prices.

A lower price does not tell you what it can run

A small carryable generator and a larger wheeled generator may cost a similar amount but do very different jobs. First list what you want to plug in. Then think about who will move it and start it. Check Amazon for current prices.

For example, the Westinghouse iGen1500c supplies 1,000 running watts and weighs roughly 32–33 pounds. The WEN GN5600 supplies 4,500 running watts and weighs 103.6 pounds with its wheel and handle kit. Those differences matter more than the biggest number on the box.

Check voltage as well as watts

The WEN GN5600 supplies 120V. The WEN DF475T offers 120/240V. If your well pump needs 240V, the generator must provide it and have enough power to start the pump. Ask an electrician to check the complete setup.

An outlet marked 30A does not mean every generator with that outlet supplies the same power. The DF475T is rated for 3,800 running watts on gasoline. Its larger-style outlet does not increase that rating.

Decide whether easier starting is worth extra weight

The Westinghouse WGen3600DFcv starts with a pull cord and weighs 104.7 pounds without fuel. The WGen3600DFc adds electric and remote starting and wheels, but weighs 121.1 pounds. Both supply 3,600 running watts on gasoline and 3,240 on propane.

Check what comes in the box, including wheels, the remote, and propane equipment. Similar names on the same shopping page can refer to different models. Confirm the full model number before buying.

Read the warranty and ask about unclear features

A three-year warranty may not cover every repair cost for three years. The matching WEN GN5600 home-use manual lists parts and labor for one year, with parts-only coverage through three years, subject to the full terms. Check where service is available and who pays transport costs.

Some manufacturer information conflicts. For example, the WGen3600cv overview mentions carbon monoxide shutdown while its specifications say no. Ask the maker to confirm the exact unit. That safety feature is extra protection and never makes a garage or other enclosed space safe.
