New to battery backup? Here’s what the numbers mean.

What can I plug in? Watts (W) tell you how much power the station can supply at one time. A phone charger needs much less power than a space heater. Refrigerators may need extra power when they first switch on, so check the review and your appliance label.

How long will it last? Watt-hours (Wh) tell you how much charge the battery stores. A bigger battery runs the same devices longer. For example, a 1,000 Wh battery supplying a steady 100-watt load would last less than 10 hours because the station uses some charge itself.

Are solar panels included? Some packages include panels; others sell them separately. You can also recharge most stations from a wall outlet. Solar charging needs daylight and slows in shade or cloudy weather.
