Check how much fuel you may store

Ask your local fire department about storage rules before keeping gasoline or propane at home. Use containers approved for that fuel. Do not use drink bottles, open buckets, or homemade tanks.

Keep fuel away from flames and heat

Follow the container label. Keep fuel away from living spaces, sparks, heat, and appliances with pilot lights or other ignition sources. Propane cylinders belong outdoors in the position and conditions their instructions require. Keep all fuel protected from damage and children.

Label fuel and replace it when needed

Write the purchase date on the container. Follow the engine and fuel instructions for storage time and stabilizer. Check containers and hoses for damage or leaks. Have a qualified person deal with leaks. Never use a flame to look for one.

Let the engine cool before refueling

Turn the generator off and let it cool before adding gasoline. Fuel spilled on a hot engine can catch fire. Keep battery lights handy so you can see during the shutdown. Follow local fire-safety advice for storing fuel and keeping an extinguisher nearby.
