Keep the correct manual nearby

Find the manual for your exact model. Write down the oil type, how much oil it needs, and when to change it. The first oil change may be needed much sooner than later ones. Keep a printed copy with the generator so you can use it without internet access.

Practice before the power goes out

Check the generator for damage and add the correct oil before its first start. Check fuel hoses and cords. Charge the starter battery if it has one. Practice starting and stopping it outdoors in the safe location you plan to use. Try the appliances you expect to power, within all the equipment limits.

Plan time to stop and care for it

Keep track of how many hours the engine has run. Shut it down and let it cool before adding gasoline or doing maintenance. Keep enough correct oil and supplies for the manual’s service schedule. Never disable an oil or carbon monoxide safety shutoff to keep the engine running. Stop using it if something seems wrong.

Store it ready for next time

Follow the manual for fuel storage and starter-battery care. Simply letting the engine run out of gas may not complete the storage steps. Let the generator cool before putting it away. Keep its air openings and exhaust clear when you use it again.
